Buying An iPod
Posted on June 8, 2006 - Filed Under Music |
As many friends of mine are aware, my iPod broke some time ago, making my life a lot worse in the process. The time has now come to replace it and I have a few questions that I’d really appreciate answered.
Firstly, do the newer iPods really need a protective case to keep scratches off the screen? My previous one was scarred all-over, but that was just an old model that couldn’t display colours, nevermind videos, so that didn’t bother me. Does anyone know if the new screens are made of more durable material?
Secondly, where can I download (for free) films that can be played on a video iPod? I’d like to avoid having to jump through the hoop of file conversion, but maybe that’s unavoidable. (Some readers may be appalled to learn that I would consider downloaded films for free, but they could not nearly be as appalled I am by the fact that I’ll have to shell out an additional €50 for an ‘Apple Care’ plan if I want my iPod to be guaranteed to last longer than one year. Such additional cover is completely unnecessary, legally speaking, but in reality a customer is screwed if they don’t buy it. Hence, I don’t feel a shred of remorse when I download content for free and not through the iTunes Store. Anyway, I buy whatever it was I downloaded afterwards if I like it.)
Thirdly, because I download a lot of music, it’s possible that there are some rather malign files with viruses and whatnot in my iTunes folder. Should I start afresh with the new iTunes program that comes with the iPod, or is that a ridiculous waste of time? I’m inclining towards the latter, especially since I’ll be importing pretty much all those potentially corrupt files onto the iPod anyway.
Fourthly, since Apple are such a bunch of condom mongrels (I don’t know what it means either, but it’s still funny), is there any other portable music player that I ought to consider buying instead? I’ll only switch from Apple if I can bring my music library with me, because there’s no way I’m going to import songs from all my CDs again.
Anyway, that’s all I can think of question-wise now. I’ll appreciate any helpful responses.

Should you buy a case? For an iPod, yes.
Where can I download films for free? There’s no one-word answer anymore, but if you can get yourself invited to an exclusive torrent site like Oink or BitMeTV then go for it. Assuming you can’t, eMule is pretty ok, but your patience will be tried.
What about viruses? I don’t even know what you’re talking about. An mp3 can’t have a virus in it, and an iPod can’t get a virus anyway. (Yes, if you’re really stupid you can fuck up the firmware by yourself, but that’s not a virus. It’s you.) You know you really should send this one into The Sunday Times for that guy Nigel to blather on about. Voiruses, scoff, scoff… Moving on.
Are Apple condom mongrels? Yes, they are the product of several would-be parents using the same condom until someone got pregnant.
What about alternatives? Personally, I think that iAudio make the best portable media players. They’re nice looking, they’ve got 35 hour battery life (some of them) and they show up as a removable drive in Windows which is endlessly handy. This is also true of iRiver. They’re really nice too. Creative players are only so-so. They have an iTunes like software called MediaSource which is the biggest headache for me, being a Zen owner. I won’t even start on Sony. I still haven’t forgiven them for all that atrac nonsense. So in short, I’d go for an iAudio or an iRiver.
So that’s what a condom mongrel is…
Someone I know got an iRiver and it broke on the day she got it. Can any of those other mp3 players play videos? And would it be possible for me to transfer my whole iTunes music library onto one of them, or would I have to import my entire CD collection onto my computer again?
Thanks for the response.
iRivers and iAudios both play videos. In it’s infant stage, I think that the ability to play video is a bit of a gimmick. I’d imagine you should be able to transfer your iTunes library to one of them. I’ve never really used iTunes though so I don’t know. I’m not much help but do a search on google. You’re bound to find an answer.
Too late now, i just ordered a new iPod. Change is frightening.
Apart from Soulseek, what other sites are good for downloading music and video files?
I just use Soulseek. It’s the cheese.
Rightio, as for piration and pirateing in general (yarrrr) I would recomend bittorrent for movies, large applications (probably not for you) and feature lenght porn films! (i can’t last 90minutes but it means you can stop and continue the movie at a later stage and some of them even have plots!.. all revolving around having alot of sex of course)
Anyway yes, there be a site called torrents.to that’ll search several torrent websites for what you want. I use an invite only torrent network which guarntees me great download speeds but means i have to upload (or seed) my files for about 9days on the trot.
Is it worth it?
My massive collection of porn-with-a-storyline says yes!
