“We’re Doing This For The Boys In Iraq”

What a member of the U.S. team said to journalists before his team’s match with Italy, according to Bill O’Herlihy. I laughed until I wept.

Apparently the same player, Landon Donovan I believe, claimed that his side were not going out to play a game of football but fight a war against the Azzurri, and the Americans certainly made good on his promise. It was a poor match, and the U.S. were a disgrace. Granted, the Italians, and Daniele De Rossi in particular, did not respond to the American’s aggression in the most admirable way, but they cannot be blamed for the game descending into such a sad spectacle. Liam Brady aptly summed the U.S. afterwards in the RTÉ studio when he discribed them as “brutal”, and Bill himself came down hard on Bruce Arena’s team when he suggested that they were “bloodthirsty”.

Of course Ray Houghton thought the Americans were great, which is not surprising in the slightest, because the man is an idiot.
