Technical Difficulties

Posted on October 8, 2006 - Filed Under Tech |

So I got my MacBook, and I love it, etc…

However, I have one major problem. Surprisingly, given that I have a reading age af a dyslexic eight year old when it comes to computer literacy, I was able to install Windows XP on it using Bootcamp without too much difficulty (which is not to say that there wasn’t some difficulty). My major problem is that, while Windows XP was indeed installed, an infuriating little reminder keeps popping up telling me that I have 30 days to register it before it becomes unuseable.

I should probably mention here that the version of Windows XP I installed was the exact same one that is installed and registered on our home PC. While I had no problem reregistering Microsoft Office on a second computer, it appears that it’s not possible to do the same with Windows XP.

So what am I to do? Will Windows XP really die on me, or is that just an idle threat? Is there any way to get around this problem?

lol I warned you this would happen. You need a legit new version of Xp with a legit serial key. That means buying a new version. From the shop.

Though I have heard that you could try using your Dell’s serial key (usually on the side of the box). Since Dell’s are volume licensed… the key has not actually been used. But it’s only a rumour I heard ;-) and is apparently illegal.

I’ve tried that and can confirm that it doesn’t work. I’m a little crestfallen really; for a while there I thought I had out-smarted Bill Gates and the entire Microsoft Empire. Now I’ll have to uninstall all the Microsoft stuff and reconfigure the hard-drive and all other sorts of technical stuff I don’t understand. And I’ll have to buy Microsoft Office for Mac too.

Just as well I prefer the Mac interface.

you could allways get a crack. Why buy the software twice? Just search google for windows xp activation crack.

Granted most of the stuff available is all forms of bizzare torjans and such but if you don’t mind your computer trying to dial up to a porn site all the time it’ll work.

No thanks, I don’t want this new computer to get raped by viruses and the like.

IS that an illegit copy of Windows you mean Liam? Would it not still require a product key?

In retrospect, a winky would have been better.

How would you register it so? If you don’t register it, Windows shuts off after 30 days. What version are you talking about too, XP?
