The Hogfather on Sky One

I watched the first half last night when I arrived home merry at 2 a.m. (having recorded it on Sky Plus), and I watched the second half this evening. For some reason the second half didn’t seem nearly as amusing as the first…
All things considered, it was a decent enough attempt at transposing the Discworld to the small screen, but one which was always destined to end in disappointment. Yes, Death was portrayed quite well, and yes, Unseen University was close enough to my own conception of it, and yes, Michelle Dockery was ridiculously hot as Susan, Death’s granddaughter, but the overall effect could never match my own imagination’s take on the Discworld, although it was nice to get another perspective.
I think that the moral to be drawn from this is that engagement with the work of Terry Pratchett is a bit like masturbation: you can get other people involved with not unpleasant results, but fundamentally it’s a job best left to oneself because everyone has their own, ‘right’ way of doing it.
