I wrote something relatively long (by recent standards) on this story and then deleted it by accident. I then rewrote it and lost it again through tired clumsiness. I’m not going to rewrite it again, so I’ll just say that I think it’s a very bad idea and leave it at that.

Agreed. The right are very cleverly trying to curtail freedom by starting with their own paraphernalia.

I’ve already read that Hindus are protesting the proposed ban because they use the swastika as a symbol of peace
I think it’s a bt unfair of you to suggest that Nazi paraphernalia is somehow ‘owned’ by Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats and other moderate parties on the German right. I don’t think there’s anything intentionally malign about the German proposal, I just think it’s the wrong way of dealing with the issue.
