A Half-Glass-Full Kind of Post

Posted on February 10, 2007 - Filed Under Life-In-General, Media |

I was going to blog about all the things that are conspiring to depress me at the moment, but I doubt that anyone wants to read about such matters and so instead here’s a post about some stuff that I have good things to say about.

1. Doonesbury. Garry Trudeau’s hilarious & widely syndicated cartoon is the first thing I head for online every morning, and it’s often the best thing I find on…

2. Teh Internets. The one-stop location for blogging, overseas news media, porn and…

3. Ze Frank. An amazingly talented vlogger who represents the very best of new media, Ze Frank is very nearly as funny as…

4. Stephen Colbert. Host of quite possibly the finest show on television (though admittedly I’ve never seen an entire episode), Colbert is of that rare breed of comedians/actors who are consistently genuinely funny. Almost as adept at hauling me out of a bad mood as…

5. Jaroslav Hasek. Author of ‘The Good Soldier Svejk’, Hasek’s humour may not be the most complicated or highbrow, but it’s more to my liking than anything else I’ve come across (maybe that makes me a simpleton at heart; whatever).

I could go on stringing things I like together like this, but its novelty is by now wearing thin I’m sure you’ll agree. I hadn’t intended to only mention comic things, but that’s how it turned out.

This raises a point that I’ve considered before, namely that I place a higher value on humour than most other people because I’m not at all capable of it myself. This may seem paradoxical, but it makes sense to me (which I’ll concede isn’t a great argument in favour of my theory). Of course that is not to say that I don’t have standards with regard to what I will laugh at; I find popular ‘funny’ films like ‘Shrek’ and TV shows like ‘The Simpsons’ loathsome in the extreme.

Still, when something I find amusing comes along I perhaps derive more enjoyment from it than others. After all, what else is there to do when you don’t make it to the gym as planned, there’s no damn food in the house, your head feels like pack ice, your car is banjaxed, and your dog is fighting for his life on a drip in a veterinary clinic?
