Knut – The Next Al Gore?

Knut

‘Knut’ is the name a polar bear cub that was born in Berlin 15 weeks ago. He was rejected by his mother, and so the zoo officials had to rear him through hand-feeding, which has angered some German animal rights activists who think that he should have been left to die. Calls to “kill the bear” have drawn world-wide attention to Knut, and polar bears in general, and so Knut has joined Al Gore in highlighting the problem of global warming. Go Knut!

More Knut.

Even Stephen Colbert is won over by this bear (kinda).

I haven’t researched it beyond something I read in some random newspaper but I’m almost certain that this Knut thing is a load of bollox:

According to what I read, some Zoo in Germany put down a polar bear cub after its mother rejected it, despite the fact that it was being cared for by a dog or something. An animal rights campaigner who protested *against* this, on hearing about Knut’s story said something to the effect that if they were to go by the logic of this other German Zoo, Knut should be put down. The quote was siezed on and distorted by some German rag and evolved into the current story, which as I said, is apparently a load of bollox.

Even if that’s true, it doesn’t really change anything. The Stephen Colbert clip is still great.

Obviously Colbert is great, that’s a priori true.

Just saying it’s annoying that lots and lots of news agencies can run with something without checking its original context. Makes you wonde rhow much of bigger stories they screw up.
