Nicolas Sarkozy ftw

He might not seem like a very nice guy, but this blog endorses Nicolas Sarkozy’s bid to become the next French president. He’s the only candidate in the election who seems to understand the need to liberalise the moribund French economy, and he might just have the strength of character necessary to railroad his proposed reforms through once in power.

Sarkozy closest rival is the Socialists’ nomination, Segolene Royal, who is an affable but gaffe-prone candidate running on a hopelessly out of date socialist platform. The centrist candidate Francois Bayrou is mopping up a lot of the protest vote, but he doesn’t appear to have many good ideas and in any event would find it almost impossible to govern effectively were he elected because his parliamentary party is so small. The remaining nine candidates (including Jean-Marie Le Pen, three Trotskyites and a traditional communist, and an anti-globalisation eco-warrior, among others) stand no chance of becoming the next president and it will be a major upset (and probably an embarrassment too) if any of them make it into the second round.

Given the field of candidates, Nicolas Sarkozy wins my approval by default.

Any more details? I can’t find anything to suggest that Royal’s policies are ‘out of date’ relative to Sarkozy’s.
All wikipedia could tell me is that Royal seems to be fairly pro-LGBT and Sarkozy doesn’t like chavs.
Given my general ignorance of both I’m rooting for the left-wing one by default.

Royal is pro-35 hour working week, anti-liberalising reforms and intent on making more jobs in the already swollen French public sector. If she wins it will be a disaster for France. The country needs someone to shake things up and Sarko is the man to do it (no sexism intended).
