Global warming is likely to wipe out polar bears. These pictures are meant to be evocative of this problem, although they obviously do not display images of polar bears dying due to global warming. Everyone knows polar bears can swim, and that they willing float about on ice floes, but they still need some permanent ice to live on all year round.

As it does every year. That's about the fifth picture of polar bears "stuck" on the icebergs I've seen (the Examiner did a full page once). They're probably happier hunting from there as they are on land, seeing that they need ice to catch seals.

They can't swim forever; they need ice, and that's melting.

From wikipedia:

"Polar bears are excellent swimmers and have been seen in open Arctic waters as far as 60 miles from land. In some cases they spend half their time on ice floes. Their 12 cm (5 in) layer of fat adds buoyancy in addition to insulating them from the cold."
