Truce?

Posted on June 3, 2007 - Filed Under Blogging |

Alexis de Tocqueville once said that “All free peoples appear glorious to themselves; but national pride does not manifest itself among all in the same manner.” Although this is a long way short of being directly relevant to me, as an unabashed admirer of America I think there’s something I can take from it as a basis of a truce agreement.

Anthony, Daniel, Eoin (x2), Liam & anyone else I might have missed, lets just agree to disagree. This argument about America is becoming fractious. I’m certainly not backing down on my position, but I’m become more and more irritated by sniping comments that misrepresent my point of view. I welcome debate on this blog, but I think everyone’s become too dug in on this issue to give an inch at this point, so there’s no point in continuing this bad-tempered argument. I acknowledge a portion of the blame for the ill-humoured manner in which the discussion took place; in particular I do not think that this post did much to improve the quality of the discourse.

Particular thanks to Daniel, who managed to get heavily involved in the debate without throwing verbal punches.

Wish I’d seen this before I posted again.

It ended well though. I could see that eventually we’d have to agree to disagree, but that doesn’t necessarily make the debate pointless. I may not agree with you but typing that up forced me to frame my own argument in my head properly to my own satisfaction, so thanks for that.

Anyway, as I said at the end of my last post agreement in a blog is boring.
