Day Two

Posted on June 6, 2007 - Filed Under China |

The time here is seven hours ahead of Irish time, and it’s nearly 4pm here, so good morning. I’ve seen more of Beijing today, it seems we (Eoin, Anthony & Shane) were in the outskirts of the capital yesterday. We wandered around Tienemen Square for a bit. It’s enormous, and flanked by state monuments on all sides. Very impressive due to sheer size. Images of Chairman Mao are everywhere. He’s on every note (of the currency).

The English language newspaper, China Daily (if I remember correctly), is surprising good, although very business orientated. It’s leading editorial advocated greater power for the governemnt’s evironmental department, and it carried syndicated pieces from the Washington Post and The Guardian. There was even an article on the recent Democratic presidential primary debate.

All things considered, I’ve been very taken by China so far. The only major drawbacks about coming here are the flight (10 hours) and the heat (well into the 30s at the very least). Gmail doesn’t seem to be blocked everywhere either, so horay for that.

More in the coming days.

Update: SiteMeter doesn’t work in China.
