Rotten Apples

Just one apple actually, Apple Computers (although they no longer go by that name; now it’s just ‘Apple’). Ever since I got my first iPod I’ve been rather smitten by the company, but recent events have prompted a change of opinion. Basically, Apple software (Boot Camp) has rotted the core of my MacBook, and now my ‘volume structure’ (or something like that) is out of whack. Further to this, the problem appears unresolvable, since it cannot be fixed with the Tech Tool disc that comes with the Apple Care plan.

This volume structure affliction may or may not explain recent problems with my Mac, such as downloads that do not download, megabytes of lost data (programs such as Firefox lost everything they had), and the seemingly random resetting to default of various applications and system configurations. Oh yeah, and the battery is now completely shot too, after working perfectly well only last week.

I called Apple about all this, and, having waited for the best part of an hour to talk to someone while rap music warred with telephone fuzz on the other end, I eventually spoke to a guy who arranged to send out a battery replacement. Unfortunately, barring an extraordinary stroke of luck, I’ll be sending the battery straight back with the rest of the MacBook, since I only learned of the volume structure problem after speaking to the support tech.

Finally, Apple rounded off its sub-par performance by delivering the battery to my Dad’s office today, while he was away, meaning I’ll have to organise the return of my current battery myself, since I couldn’t hand it over to the courier. If they don’t get their corporate paws on it in the next few day I’ll be charged over 100 euro for a replacement that’s meant to be free.

Apologies for moaning like this, but what are blogs for if not airing perceived unjust grievances? Also, would wiping the hard-drive and attempting to re-install Mac OSX fix this problem, or does it sound like there is something fundamentally askew with the hard-drive itself? Lastly, if anyone from the Apple PR department is reading this and would like to rekindle my affection for the company, I will fully retract these disgruntled sentiments if you can see to it that a sleek, new, black, LED-screen, 2GH (or whatever that abbreviation is, you know, the ’speed’), 120GB hard-drive, 13″ MacBook wings its way to my door as a replacement for the hobbled, diseased one that Apple should never have sold to me in the first place. Rant over.

I can’t belive Steve Jobs is reading your blog! Or, to use his words ‘no wai!’

but yeah, don’t bother trying to install it again, it seems like you screwed up your filesystem so an install would fix it again but tell apple your problems. Their service is touch and go but sometimes they get it right.

Actually, despite my complaining I find their support pretty good, as it would want to be, given how much their apple care plans cost. I expect that they’ll sort this out once I get back to them about it, even though it will entail waiting for about an hour on the phone.

So you don’t think that it’s a hardware issue then? I’m not sure if it would re-install, given that it seems there’s a fundamental problem with the basic infrastructure. Apologies for the n00bish terminology.

It’s not a hardware problem. It looks like something happened the file system (the structure of how files are stored, the data ‘layout’ i suppose) is corrupted due to installing windows, maybe. I reckon a complete reinstall would work but you’d lose all your warez and pr0n that way. I say send it off to apple and let them do their mojo on it.
