Definitely my favourite Republican candidate; possibly my favourite candidate overall. It’s a shame he isn’t eight years younger…

They really missed a trick by not nominating him for 2000 alright. It really is a shame he’s probably finished now.
I really have to disagree with both of ye.. even dismissing the basic statement that ‘republicans are EVIL’, I don’t think that theres much that McCain has to offer and while he is probably the best of the lot of the Republican candidates – he does flip-flop a lot so I don’t think that theres a lot that he’s saying because he really believes it… And frankly with Republicans its a case of ‘what verneal disease would you like’ rather than not getting one in the first place…
I’m not aware of much flip-flopping on McCain’s part. While he did disappoint quite a few people, myself included, with his visit to the late Jerry Falwell’s ‘university’ last year, he probably figured that the Christian nut vote carried too much sway in the Republican Party for him to ignore it, and so made his peace with Falwell.
He’s been consistently taking the same line on matters like abortion for years, and he’s the only candidate from either party who seems to have any real interest in, or understanding of, the war in Iraq (all the other candidates deal with the issue through sound bites, e.g. ‘bring our brave soldiers home to their families’, ‘fighting them there so we don’t have to fight them here’…). The real chameleon in the Republican race is Flipper Romney, who’s tacked well to the right on issues ranging from abortion to gay rights.
As for your last point John, again I have to disagree. You don’t have to scroll back to the time of Abe Lincoln to find decent Republican presidents (e.g., George H.W. Bush dealt with the disintegration of the USSR pretty well, while also contending with Saddam Hussain’s trouble making in the Middle East). Similarly, Democratic presidents have not always been that impressive (Jimmy Carter anyone?). The Republican Party is more than George W. Bush and the Christian right, and the success, thus far, of Rudy Giuliani’s campaign attests to this.
While my own sympathies generally lean towards the Democrats, not one of their candidates has seriously impressed me so far. Hillary Clinton is uninspiring, Barack Obama is too inexperienced, and John Edwards little more than a populist. Throw into the mix gaffe-prone Joe Biden, crazy old Mike Gravel, and nobodies like Chris Dodd and Dennis Kucinich, and the Democratic race comes close to resembling something of a farce.
I would prefer to see Obama or Clinton beat any Republican presidential nominee besides McCain, but as things stand I consider McCain to be the best candidate on offer. The best of a bad lot, perhaps, but the best nonetheless.
Well with regards to the war – which is where I’d consider a lot of the flip-flopping to have been done by McCain, he was even recently talking the up the case for attacking Iran so I’m not too sure how well that stacks up for the ‘Understanding the war’ idea
On the history side of it – well George Bush senior wasn’t bad in forign policy but his domestic policies weren’t the best. And your reference to Jimmy Carter is a bit harsh.. he actually was one of the better presidents, he didn’t send american soldiers into countries they were unwanted and did more to improve the status of human rights than most presidents. In many ways he is what most people ‘say’ they want in a president. And he seemed to be a genuinely moral person which is something you cant say about most of them.
That aside though, at the moment given their attachment to the religious right (posibly THE most immoral group in the ‘west’ at the moment) the fact that none of the republicans stood agianst the Iraq War (neither did the democrats but they weren’t the ones running it so..) and the fact that the Republican party is now the party of Big Business and torture I couldn’t see myself regarding a single member of them as even remotely acceptable as President.
