Gibson Les Paul Studio
Posted on August 30, 2007 - Filed Under Music | 20 Comments

This seems to be as close as I can get to the black Les Paul Trent Reznor plays. The body is more or less spot on, but his guitar seems to have a different fretboard and pickups. The few reviews I’ve read have been very positive, and seemingly it’s a perfect guitar for playing stuff at the heavier end of the musical spectrum. How much do you think this guitar is worth, based on its stats?.

I bet the one that Trent plays has the dot inlays. That’s a ‘true’ Les Paul Studio inlay. This is a Studio, but it’s part of the “Guitar of the Week” promotion.. basically part of the custom shop. Custom Shop Les Pauls are pretty pricey ranging from $3k and up. Interesting that is has the EMG pickups in there.. I could see those being hot and heavy. I bet this guitar will be pretty expensive. I would see if you can find a Les Paul Studio with satin ebony finish.. there might be a few still out there.
Do you have a pic of Trent’s guitar somewhere? Could be a really worn ebony body giving the satin look.
I bet this guitar would sound and play pretty nice though.

There’s a pretty good shot of the guitar here ( http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1207893462&size=o ), although the headstock looks more like an Epiphone than a Gibson. I’ve seen the guitar in the picture available for around $1,400, but none of the sites selling it seems to ship to Europe.
(When I write “the guitar in the picture”, I mean the one on this site, not the flickr photo.)
I’ve found a site that will ship to Ireland. Including postage, it works out at about $1,500, which is roughly equivalent to €1,100.
Does anyone think that my buying this guitar would not be a ridiculous and wholly unnecessary extravagance?
I would agree. The shot with Trent is a Ephiphone Les Paul Standard (dot inlays). Looks like Duncan pickups too.
Wow $1400 for Guitar of the Week is pretty sweet! I see the satin is $1399.. but only US/Can shipping (seems kinda odd)

I also think the guitar that Trent has might be the Ephiphone Gothic Studio. I don’t think they make them anymore, but you can find them on eBay. Here are a couple of links to categories where there are currently a couple of Gothics. You might have better luck with Euro shipping in this case.. plus the cost would be much cheaper with the Ephiphone.

Good luck!

There is nothing wrong with spending $1500 on a quality guitar. They hold their value, play and sound great.. plus it’s something you want. Seems like a no-brainer to me. I would look into the Gothic.. because I’m thinking that’s the guitar that Trent is riding in that photo.
Here is a good pic.. looks like Epiphone is still making them after all. Now after closer look, this doesn’t have the dot inlays

I don’t think it’s an Epiphone Gothic that he’s playing in the picture; the headstock is very different (no cross, steel machine heads).
its not a gothic, and i think the gothic looks tastless. honestly, i think it would be a total waste of money. You have a fender strat of excellent quality which you have no need to replace. If you really really want that lovely big fat crunch(the reason i play les paul) then just buy an epiphone. seriously, at your level, you wont be able to tell the difference. once you start to tour, or record, you can upgrade. The only thing lacking really is a more defined tone and clarity, which is mostly due to the more expensive pick ups in the gibson. The better quality wood wont have much of an effect as youll have it drenched in effects anyway.( clean, it would give much more warmth and resonance )
and remember, you might hate the feeling of les pauls. They are MUCH heavier than your strat and much fatter against the body ( remember how i couldnt even play your strat the first time ) and the neck is much smaller and deeper. you neck will be much wider and flatter in comparison.
try out an epiphone and if you like the feel, and have money to throw away, why not. alternativly, just use the s->H option on the me-50 i lent you to mimic the tone and hey presto. nobody can see you in your bedroom anyway.
“There is nothing wrong with spending $1500 on a quality guitar.”
lol. yes there is.if you dont need it for example.
“They hold their value,”
-if there gibson. not epiphone.
“plus it’s something you want. Seems like a no-brainer to me”
-but of course. to use our brain would deprive gibson of somebodys hard earned money, for another overpriced luxury item that we dont need.
(for the record-i love gibsons and wouldnt touch a strat ever. I also realised that gear is only 5% of music, and you just gotta play the damn thing. give hendrix (or trent) a crap guitar and theyd still make the same great music. dont get caught up in consumerism.)
Studios are not reputed to be very heavy.
Also, even if no else ever sees the guitar, I’ll still see it, so I’d like it to look cool. That’s not to say that buying a Gibson is a shrewd investment, but it still counts for something.
I’m not under any illusions as to the benefits of getting a new guitar. I don’t think that I’ll suddenly morph in a good guitarist or anything like that. However, that in itself doesn’t seem to make getting a good gibson guitar a reckless waste of money. True enough, maybe I won’t appreciate all the subtleties of the rich tone right away, but I’ll be able to tell the difference between it and my single coil loaded strat, and I’ll be able to appreciate that it sounds good, as opposed to bad. Also, it won’t be replacing my strat, I’ll still use that for the lighter music I like.
I Found it for 1477 incl. case.

Don’t buy it.
winning is right. you prob wont even be able to tell the difference between the single coil tbh cause A) itll be distorted
B) youve got no ear
and to make it worse youll stop playing guitar anyway in a few months. its a phase. resist the temptation. thats all ill say on the matter.
€1,477 is more expensive than €1,100, but thanks for searching.
Even if my guitar playing lapses now and then for a few months, it’s not like the guitar’s going to disappear, and it’s not like I’ll never play it.
€1,100 +21% import tax on electronics to the EU = €1,331.
Eoin’s thomann link is close, but Trent’s is definitely an Epiphone. It weirdly has an arched top like a Gibson though. It must be an old, discontinued or retrofitted model. I seriously wouldn’t charge off and buy a Gibson considering their exorbitant pricing.
If you’re interested though, Aaron North plays Hagstroms, also excellent guitars.

Yum… I’ve wanted that guitar for so long now.
More guitar porn:

That would cost around €793,89 shipped by my estimation.
I think all this talk of buying guitars has given me GAS. That’s Gear Acquisition Syndrome btw; a musician’s worst enemy.
Eoin’s link is to exactly the same guitar as the one linked to in the initial post, except that the initial link’s classes the fretboard as being ebony, whereas every other site describes it as rosewood. Even with a protectionist tariff, it’s still cheaper to buy from the US because of the weak dollar.
damn liam, that 2nd guitar is hot.
personally , i lust after the first two guitars here:

custom jobs and loaded with cool shit. sounds great.

thats the only gibson one id buy as the les pauls are not value for money.
failing that, next in line would be a sexy little telecaster,(a nice color, tabacco burst if they do it) then a big fuck off bronze resonator. maybe a jag or a gold top lespaul to round it off. i hear they sound pretty amazing.

just had another look at liams guitar. dark purple satin is goddamn sex..
I actually really like the finish on that Les Paul Studio. The full black gives it a pretty sweet look!
