Subscription Walls Collapse
Posted on September 25, 2007 - Filed Under Media |
Both the New York Times and The Economist have recently taken the bold step of opening up their websites to non-subscribers. In the case of the NY Times (which Gavin blogged about before me), you can now view articles from as far back as 1987 (and much earlier in some cases). Meanwhile, new content will remain accessible on The Economist website for one year, after which time a subscription will be needed to view it. The audio edition is still available to subscribers only, I think. I wonder if this means that both sites will not become more cluttered with adverts, since the content itself is now free to access.
