Prediction: Romney 2008

Posted on January 24, 2008 - Filed Under American Politics |

Rudy Giuliani is going to lose Florida to McCain or Romney and then fall of the radar, leaving the GOP nomination race a dead heat between McCain and Romney. Even as the only viable alternative to Romney, McCain will still struggle to raise funds and so Romney will effectively buy Super Tuesday with his vast personal fortune, thus securing him the Republican nomination. On the Democratic side the Clintons’ brutish tactics will triumph over Obama’s idealism, and so they’ll win their party’s nomination, but only after permanently alienating about a quarter of Democratic voters, who will be so disgusted with the Clintons that they will refuse to support them in the general election.

Come November, in the race between Clinton and Romney, a little careful pandering, flip-flopping and general subterfuge by Mitt Romney on issues such as abortion will be enough for him to recast himself as the moderate who governed Massachusetts for four years. Thus independents and disgruntled Democrats will find themselves with a choice between a divisive, uninspiring and downright unscrupulous Democratic nominee or Mitt Romney. And I predict they’ll opt for Romney, just as I would.

Nawp. Dems will win on the basis of a tanking economy. It’s the number one issue this year, and voters will want change, Rep and Dems alike.

    Good analysis. Wanna fight? (jk)

To suggest (as in comment 2) that citizens will turn to Democrats as an economic safe-haven is a joke. If economy is truly the number one issue (as it may prove to be), Romney wins by a landslide. He’s the only one who actually has insider knowledge of it in the real world, and vast success in it, at that. Which Dem has any such claim?

I think I would give McCain more of a chance in Super Tuesday, he’s got a big chance to gobble up disgruntled Clinton supporters and give Romney a tough battle.

Romney isn’t all about money, the media trumps that up because they want to instill a subconscious jealousy into people about sucessful businessmen, Huck tried that and he lost out.
Americans want to be sucessful and why not follow the example of someone who has done it many times over.
I am voting for Romney because he is the best canidate, money or no money.

I know this post isn’t specifically about the GOP debates tonight in Florida, but you gotta admit, Romney’s quip about Bill Clinton back at the White House with nothing to do was pretty freaking hilarious.

I’d vote for him just for that!

I think you’re assuming that people will associate a candidate with being smart on the economy - i think people will just associate Reps with being dumb on the economy and seek change as a result of that.

    An optimistic counter-prediction:

Obama and McCain come out on top on Super Tuesday with Obama narrowly beating his GOP rival in the election proper.

McCain isn’t all he’s cracked up to be. For someone who claims to be a straight-talker he’s been peddling a mighty whopper about Romney recently, saying that Romney favours a timetable to withdraw from Iraq, in clear contrast to his own awesome plan to stay there for 100 years.
