The Republican Crack-Up

While this blog has warmed to Mitt Romney’s candidacy in recent weeks, I find some of the anti-McCain mud being chucked around quite appalling. Even on respectable conservative blogs the levels of anti-McCain vitriol is tumbling into the realm of the truly vile, with some readers suggesting that they’d like to push McCain down a flight of stairs, or they’d have liked to see Mitt Romney punch him in a recent debate, or they’d have liked to see Romney tussle McCain’s hair in the same debate and watch as McCain sat there unable to fix it (McCain can’t raise his arms over his head because the Vietcong didn’t reset them properly after braking them when McCain was a POW in Vietnam).
This Republican vulgarity looks all the more idiotic given that McCain is at this point almost certain to secure the GOP nomination on Tuesday, which will leave anti-McCain Republicans with the unhappy choice of either staying home in November or voting for the man they so despise. It’s hard to feel any sympathy for these bitter-enders; after subjecting the world to eight years of George W Bush they deserve so much worse…
