Tim Russert’s Death

There’s plenty of reaction in the American blogosphere, check the sidebar links if you’re interested. I’ll really miss the guy; Meet the Press won’t be the same without him. He was a tough interviewer, but never pompous or rude, and his round-table discussions were great at cutting through all the talking points and fuzz of American politics. I always found him to be impeccably balanced in his treatment of both parties, and I could never tell where his own political affinities lay (I only learned from an obituary that he had worked as an intern for centrist Democrats before moving into journalism). By all accounts he was a very nice guy off camera as well. In an American political atmosphere of rabid blogs, ratings-driven news networks and endless party spin, his MTP was probably the most important and influential neutral battleground for public opinion. As much as his millions of viewers and readers will mourn his passing, American journalism will miss him a lot more.
