Alkaline Trio at The Ambassador

“This could be love…”
“…LOVE FOR FIIIIIIIIRE!”
I’d really like to write a review of this show that extends a little beyond “Best Gig Ever!”, but I’m finding it very difficult to come up with anything better. Along with Nine Inch Nails, Alkaline Trio are my favourite band, and I’d never seen them live before, and I’d had a few drinks beforehand so I was ever-so-slightly sozzled by the time they took to the stage, and they were on fire that night … and so essentially the concert was as good as any I could imagine, save for a one or two disappointments about the set-list (which are inevitable with all gigs and not worth dwelling on).
The band didn’t say all that much, which was fine, since it left more time for songs, but Matt Skiba did say at one point that playing this show was the most fun they’d had on stage all tour, and for whatever reason they seemed quite happy up there. I had a great view of the stage too, and I could swear that more than once I think I saw Matt beaming a smile directly at me, which I obviously reflected back at him with interest. He was probably just glancing over the entire crowd, but in my slightly toasted delirium I was fully convinced otherwise and absolutely elated.
Going into the details of exactly what they played and so on strikes me as pedantic, but it was a comprehensive set of songs spanning their whole back catalogue (Goddamnit and Crimson were lightly represented though) and they all came together beautiful. I genuinely can’t remember having a better time than when jumping around like an idiot during ‘Armageddon’ or singing along to ‘Emma’ at the top of my lungs. Simply put, it was the finest show I’m ever likely to see, and by the time they got to playing ‘Radio‘ as the encore I was soaked in sweat and as happy as I’ve been in years.
So yeah, Best Gig Ever!
