I’m by no means an expert on either Sarah Palin or American presidential elections, but McCain’s VP pick seems downright ridiculous to me. Apart from the fact that she’s obviously unprepared to be president in the event of McCain being incapacitated, it takes away the Republicans’ main line of attack on Obama, which is the charge that he’s too inexperienced for the job. Furthermore, given her apparent obliviousness to foreign affairs, she is almost certain to go down in flames when she comes up against Joe Biden (the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) in the vice presidential debate. Additionally, far from attracting women voters to the GOP ticket, I expect that many will see Palin’s selection for the cheap political gimmick it is and not be in the least bit more inclined to vote for McCain as a result of her inclusion. Finally, who’s going to want to vote for a ticket with a bona fide polar bear hater on it? Even Stephen Colbert, a man notoriously suspicious of bears, is unimpressed by her selection:

yeah, I really went into that in a much longer format… man,she’s such a bad choice…
Don’t overestimate the intelligence of many die-hard Hillary supporters.
Palin is a risky pick, yes, and perhaps indicative of McCain’s notorious reckless streak, but it has served to negate Obama’s convention bounce, energize McCain’s campaign, and lock in some of those disaffected hillary supporters who don’t realise the insult Palin’s selection represents for them.
Biden may be the worst hit: his agressive style may be severely cramped lest he come off as a bully againt Palin.
Only time will tell if the short term success of Palin’s selection is born out in the long-term. Fortunately, many Americans realise that she has a very good chance of being president: a rather ridiculous notion as you’ve pointed out.
