I don’t think of myself as a film connoisseur, but I find it odd, perplexing and not a little outrageous that neither The Wrestler nor The Dark Knight are in contention for the Best Film award. Granted, Mickey Rourke is a nominee in the Best Actor Category and Heath Ledger is expected to posthumously scoop the Best Supporting Actor award, but I’m still a little bemused. I also think that Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan deserved an nomination for making his Batman film into something much greater than a straight-up superhero movie, but it looks like the Academy thought otherwise.

Well, haven’t seen The Wrestler, but imho The Dark Knight was a surprisingly good film, but it was also ridiculously overhyped. Plus, you pretty much have to go to extraordinary lengths to win a best picture with a fantasy film.
While I’m at it: I predict either best actor win for Sean Penn or best film for Milk. (For political reasons probably, not necessarily on merit)
Yeah, I’ve heard Milk is good but not spectacular. The Dark Knight was always going to be a big deal given all the hysteria around Heath Ledger’s death, but I think it was an excellent film all the same and deserved more than just a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Ledger and a slew of nominations in technical categories.
