Life Under The Taliban

Here’s a NYTimes video report from Swat Valley in Pakistan. The Taliban have succeed in shutting down all girls’ schools in the region, and the Pakistani government recently more or less ceded control of the area to the Taliban in exchange for a cease-fire. If the Pakistani state can’t control parts of its territory 100 [...]

From BBC News: The fortune left by late real estate tycoon Leona Helmsley can go to charities other than those solely related to dogs, a US court has ruled. A New York City judge said that Helmsley’s legal documents allowed her estate’s trustees “sole discretion” in donating the money to charity. When Helmsley died in [...]

Arsenal Vs Roma

I’ve been burned by making foolhardy predictions in the past, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say 3-0 to the Gunners. They’ve obviously been squirreling away their good form for the Champions League, and that’s why they’re languishing in 5th position in the Premiership (in b4 “that’s not how it [...]

I tend to visit the same few sites every time I’m online, and I figure that many of you probably do the same. Apart from checking in on Gmail and Facebook, I invariably read Matt Yglesias’s blog, the blogs at The Atlantic website, and nin.com, to see if Trent Reznor’s posted tour dates/anything else interesting. Rambling Thoughts on Hunter Thompson

Posted on February 11, 2009 - Filed Under American Politics | Leave a Comment

Having just finished watching Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, it’s hard not to think pretty badly of Thompson. He was certainly a talented writer, but after achieving a measure of literary success and, more damagingly, fame, he seems to have completely lost his zeal and creativity. The hedonism of his [...]
