Arshavin Signs (Seemingly)

It appears that the Gunners have finally landed the Russian playmaker. I’ve mixed feelings on the transfer. On the one hand, he’s reputedly an inconsistent performer and he’ll be playing in a midfield that already includes mercurial talents like Nasri, Walcott and (if he ever gets fit again) Rosický. A more complete midfielder could also have added some defensive steel to a pretty tattered looking midfield, but it looks like Wenger feels that Denilson and Song are up to the task of holding it together by themselves, despite half a season’s worth of evidence to the contrary.
On the other hand, the club desperately needed to sign someone, and ever since Cesc got injured the team has struggled to create anything going forward. Van Persie has been carrying the side with his virtuoso performances, and even previously consistent players (Clichy, Toure, and Fàbregas until he got injured) have been playing below par. Arshavin might at least bring some creativity to a midfield that’s fresh out of it. Also, having a selection of three from Nasri, Cesc, Arshavin, Rosický and Walcott (plus Denilson to watercarry) is a pretty solid looking midfield that could see a return to the galloping attacking play from yesteryear. If nothing else, the addition of Arshavin will shove the hapless Manu Éboue further down the midfield pecking order, and that in itself is a very good thing.
