The Big Lebowski

None of the guys I went to China with have seen it apparently.

“This is CAKE TOWN!11″

I first saw this after I’d had a few beers, and watching it now I still find it funny, so I thought it was worth blogging.

Halp!11 An Ermine!1

This is for anyone that read Philip Pullman’s excellent His Dark Materials trilogy. There’s a film in the works (oddly entitled ‘The Golden Compass’), and so a website is already set up in preparation for its launch. On the site you can take a brief test to determine what dæmon is most suited to you. [...]

Everyone has probably seen this trailer already, but I couldn’t help posting about it. It looks fantastic, and it has a Nine Inch Nails song in there too. I can’t wait to see the film, even if it is just one big, gratuitously violent battle scene.

The Hogfather on Sky One

I watched the first half last night when I arrived home merry at 2 a.m. (having recorded it on Sky Plus), and I watched the second half this evening. For some reason the second half didn’t seem nearly as amusing as the first…
All things considered, it was a decent enough attempt at transposing the Discworld [...]

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Posted on October 17, 2006 - Filed Under Film, Funny | 2 Comments

I hadn’t seen this until quite recently, which is odd considering I’m a big fan of the series (the jury’s still out on season X however). The film is excellent. It’s essentially a animated musical with lots of swearing, but such a description doesn’t even come close to doing this movie justice. The songs are [...]

No, No, No!

I’ve just read on wikipedia that there is an American version of Battle Royale in the pipeline. Even if it doesn’t completely suck (which it undoubtedly will), there is still  no good reason to make another version, unless you’re a talentless film producer hoping to rip off someone else’s fine work by exploiting the fact [...]

OMG Somebody Shot W!!!11!!!

I’m just after watching a documentary about it on More4, called ‘Death of a Presdent’. It seems it happened in Chicago…
Joking aside, I was genuinely impressed by the film, which is one of the highlights of the forthcoming Cork Film Festival. It’s very well done, and not all that unbelieveable. Strangely, I was a little [...]

Al Gore for 2008

Posted on October 2, 2006 - Filed Under Film, Politics | 1 Comment

I saw Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ today. It was startling, sad and motivating. I had no idea that we were so thoroughly fucked, and I’ve been worried about this issue for years. Basically, (and not meaning to over-sell it), this is quite probably the most important film you will ever see.
Unlike many other semi-political [...]

Free FilmFour

Or “Film4″, as the new, watered-down one is called. We used to subscribe to the channel before it became free, and so I’ve been watching it for years. It’s the channel on which I first saw such excellent films as Battle Royale, Waking Life, Donnie Darko, The Seventh Seal and The Cat Returns, and hence [...]

Ah-ha!

Another WordPress feature de-mystified. Here’s the clip of the lighthouse kitchen scene from Battle Royale that I was trying to show in the previous post.

Battle Royale

Posted on May 30, 2006 - Filed Under Film | 7 Comments

I saw Battle Royale for about the fifth time last night. It never gets old… I think this one was a ‘director’s cut’ version or something, because there were a few scenes in it that I definitely hadn’t seen before. There were lots of clips from a basketball game and Mitsuko’s story was fleshed out [...]
