This actually isn’t so bad after all. Alpro Soya yogurts are delicious, I can still eat plain chocolate, and some days I make up for lost calories in my diet with lots of alcohol. I’m also doing more cooking, which is more fun than I thought it would be, and I feel pretty good generally.

Of course, the best part of all this is that for the first time in my life I’m not contributing to the abuse of animals, and that makes me feel good too, so on balance veganism is looking like a pretty viable lifestyle to me right now.

I’m not eating any animal products for one month as part of an agreement/wager with a friend, who has agreed to try vegetarianism for one month. We haven’t decided on a forfeit yet, so feel free to suggest one. It should probably be food-related, like eating a block of butter or something along similar lines.

As for veganism itself, well, it’s not much fun. It turns out that dairy or egg is in just about everything that isn’t fruit, vegetables or bread. I mean, there’s milk in all the soup in my house. There’s eggs in many kinds of pasta. There’s even shellac in sweets like Skittles. And soya milk is not very nice.

The only reason I intend to stick with it is that for every day I stay a vegan, my friend won’t eat meat, so I’m effectively doubling my vegetarianism. Besides, to re-tread a line of thought that has served me very poorly in the past, if it’s good enough for Woody Harrelson then it’s good enough for me.

The people who do medicine are awesome, and if you disagree then fuck you!

(Disclaimer: utterly inebriated post, but the sentiment still stands. One of my best friends does med, and he’s one of the nicest, most considerate guys I know. And everyone in my class is really nice too. I genuinely feel bad for dropping out of the course, because
all the other students in it are so goddamn nice. Seriously. Med students, in my experience, are a terrific group of people, and my only regret is that, well, that’s more a personal failing than anything else… But yeah, med students are jolly good folk).

{ – redacted – }

{ – redacted – }

I’m probably going to go disfigure myself with some dumb piercing tomorrow. Speak now or forever hold your peace, those who think it’s a stupid idea.

Go. I promise to be bound by popular consensus come the morning. Or I’ll just do whatever I feel like. I don’t know. Regardless, let’s have some debate.

What kind of piercing should I get? I think that a nose ring like this looks pretty cool, but so far the reception to such an idea has been positively hostile. So again, I put this issue to you, my dear readers.

To pierce or not to pierce?

Update: Here’s the picture. Yes, I know that just because it looks good on someone else does not mean it will look good on me. Still, all drunken assertions aside, I’m quite keen to get this done.

Update: I wonder how much of my recent behaviour this could explain. It could certainly account for my lethargy, but the weird dreams about half-completed killer robots (controlled by the brains of maladjusted canines) ceaselessly chasing me around a bizarre satellite dish-shaped ceramic/metallic swimming pool/sink probably require further explanation. Reading Crime and Punishment until the 3 every night can’t be helping much in this regard. I’m starting to feel like good old Rodion Romanovich himself…

I have an essay to write on this matter, so I’m interested to hear other views. Do you think it should be legal to sell body parts such as kidneys to people who are willing to pay for them? On the one hand, people do it anyway on the black market, so legalisation would clean up the practice, and if there was an open market in body parts then waiting lists for organs would be vastly reduced if not eliminated. On the other hand, it seems a bit callous and insidious to promote a system where poor people might feel compelled by economic circumstances to sacrifice their health for the sake of a few thousand dollars. Another part of me also strongly believes that if somebody wrecks their health through negligence then they deserve to live with the ill effects of their irresponsible behaviour, and shouldn’t be able to foist their ill-health onto some desperate donor. But enough of my own ideas, what do you think?
