Part of me is ecstatic; part of me is just glad it’s finally all over. I felt like it was Christmas morning when I woke up today, but by this evening the day felt more like a miserable birthday and I was in a massive sulk. I don’t know if it was nervousness or tiredness or what. Right now I’m mostly just relieved.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter at all how I feel. Well done, America. And thank you.

As the name suggests, it’s a global poll of support for candidates in the US presidential election, but based on the rather archaic electoral college system that still structures US elections. Thus, every country’s vote is weighted according to population, giving a total of 9,875 electoral college votes, including the ‘real’ 538 electoral college votes in the United States. Besides being a useful measure of global support for the two candidates, it’s the closest that some of us will get to being able to vote for Obama, so don’t miss your opportunity.

At the time I voted Obama was leading McCain by 7,779 global electoral college votes to 0.

I’m delighted with Obama picking Biden as his running mate. Even though he was never really given a fair shake in the Democratic primary, Biden was one of the most assured of all the candidates in the debates, and certainly the wittiest. Until he became a VP candidate I had thought him a likely Secretary of State in a Democratic administration, but the McCain camp’s sustained negative campaign in recent weeks obviously added a new lustre to his brawling credentials, given Obama’s apparent reluctance to return fire himself. The only other somewhat likely ‘attack dog’ veep pick, Hillary Clinton, was probably never seriously in contention for the post since Biden brings far more to the table in terms of experience (especially in foreign relations), has lower negative ratings, and also offers the possibility of gaining greater traction with the working class/Catholic/Irish demographics that Obama has yet to nail down. Biden has the further advantage of not being married to Bill Clinton.

Here he is in his element, talking about foreign affairs, slamming an opponent and being funny all at the same time. The expression on his face at the end of the clip is priceless.

He didn’t have much choice, given his former pastor’s media blitz in the last few day, during which time he’s basically shown himself to be a bitter old nut, clinging to crazy conspiracy theories and a runaway persecution complex (see what I did there?). It’s as if he wants Obama to lose the election.

“I’ll be honest, when that black guy said he would ‘stop at nothing’ to get change, it kind of scared me,” local mechanic Phil Nighbert said. “Just leave me alone.”

Though many were taken aback by the black man’s brazen demands, some, such as Jackson, MS’s Holly Moser, sympathized with him. She gave the black man credit for boldly standing up and asking every last person around him for change.

“I told him I’d give him some if I saw him later, even though I probably won’t,” Moser said. “Very nice man, though.”
