What’s the matter with Austria?

The latest shenanigans from the birthplace of Adolf Hitler:
An Austrian man has been arrested on suspicion of burning his in-laws to death with a home-made flame-thrower.
Police said the 48-year-old used a propane gas container to torch the elderly couple as they lay in bed in the village of St Magdalena am Lemberg.
I’ve been there many times and Austrians have always seemed like perfectly decent people to me. Very polite and hospitable, if somewhat reserved. It’s a beautiful country too. Maybe the quiet life just rubs some people up the wrong way…

… I really miss Tim Russert right now, don’t you?
She’d almost certainly never appear on it, but seeing Palin flail about on Russert’s MTP would have been pretty damn amusing.

From a student email:
The Students’ Union are proud to announce the Wolfe Tones shall be playing live on campus @8pm on Oct 15th. This Derek Warfield ensemble are destined to raise the bar from all other concerts held in Devere Hall in the Student Centre.
I suppose that at least this is better than one of the only two concerts organised there last. The group playing was some obscure classical ensemble and no students were able to buy tickets for it, not that many would have bothered anyway. However, the fact that it was a staff-only event (bankrolled, no doubt, by students’ capitation fees at the behest of whatever swine run the Student Centre) annoyed a lot of people, since it is, y’know, meant to be the Student Centre, and not the Nazi-palace of the control freaks who run it and try to stop us eating in the multifunction hall.

The Economist’s Global Electoral College

Here’s another great new media project from The Economist. As the name suggests, it’s a global poll of support for candidates in the US presidential election, but based on the rather archaic electoral college system that still structures US elections. Thus, every country’s vote is weighted according to population, giving a total of 9,875 electoral college votes, including the ‘real’ 538 electoral college votes in the United States. Besides being a useful measure of global support for the two candidates, it’s the closest that some of us will get to being able to vote for Obama, so don’t miss your opportunity.
At the time I voted Obama was leading McCain by 7,779 global electoral college votes to 0.

I haven’t listened to the band in years, but I still feel bad for Noel on seeing this. What kind of asshole goes to see a band and then assaults their main songwriter?

(For those not following the presidential race too closely, the McCain camp has spent the last week throwing tons of muck and telling outright lies about Obama, with the result that many on the left are getting quite wound up and demanding that Barack counter-punch in a big way. However, other, generally more considered voices on the left are suggesting that the Obama campaign stick to its message of post-partisanship and change in DC, and let McCain drive his low-road express straight into the ditch. He’s already taken it into the gutter…)
